Invisible Workload Exposure for Team Dynamics

Invisible Workload Exposure for Team Dynamics

Purpose

This exercise highlights the often-overlooked tasks that individuals perform within a team. By exposing these invisible contributions, the group gains insight into workload imbalances, which can lead to more equitable task distribution and prevent future conflicts related to unfair work distribution.

Objective

Delegates will write down the invisible tasks they regularly perform that go unnoticed or unappreciated. These lists will be shared with the group, followed by a discussion on how invisible labour affects team dynamics, morale, and productivity, as well as strategies for more equitable task distribution.

What You Need

  • Blank A4 sheets or index cards (one per delegate)
  • Flipchart or whiteboard for summarising key points from the discussion

Setup

  • Introduce the concept of invisible workload. These are tasks that are crucial for the team but often go unnoticed or unappreciated. Examples might include organising team meetings, handling unassigned emails, or mentoring junior colleagues informally.
  • Distribute A4 sheets or index cards to each delegate. Ask them to spend 5 minutes reflecting on and writing down the invisible tasks they regularly perform. Encourage them to list as many as they can, focusing on those tasks that are not formally acknowledged or assigned.
  • After 5 minutes, divide the delegates into small groups of 2 to 3 to share their lists. Instruct each person to briefly explain the invisible tasks they handle.
  • Once each person has shared their list in the small groups, bring everyone back together for a full group discussion. Summarise the main types of invisible tasks mentioned and write these on a flipchart or whiteboard.
  • Lead the group in discussing the collective impact of invisible work on team morale, productivity and potential conflicts. Use the discussion section below to guide this conversation.

Timing

Explaining the Exercise: 2 minutes

Activity: 5 min writing down invisible tasks + 10 min group discussions = 15 minutes

Group Feedback: 10 minutes

Discussion

After the group activity, use these questions to explore the impact of invisible workload:

  • How did it feel to write down and share your invisible tasks? Were you surprised by how many you listed?
  • Were there any common tasks that many people perform invisibly, or were the tasks unique to each person?
  • How do you think invisible work affects your overall workload and morale? Does it feel demotivating when these efforts go unacknowledged?
  • How might invisible tasks contribute to misunderstandings or conflicts within the team, especially if some people carry more of the burden?
  • Did this exercise reveal any potential workload imbalances within the team? How can we address these to improve team dynamics?
