Purpose

In our competitive world, we need to present ourselves as best as we can to stand out from the crowd. Suppose someone asks you what you do? What would you say? Suppose you have about 30 seconds to say something or to present a pitch? What would your pitch contain? Which areas would you pay attention to most? How long should be your pitch in number of words used?

This exercise is designed to helps delegates to come up with a pitch and refine it several times to make it near perfect.

Objective

Make a pitch and based on the feedback you receive from other delegates improve it incrementally.

What You Need

  • Several cards or papers for everyone to write their pitches on.

Setup

  • Before going through this exercise, you should brief the delegates on the characteristics of an ideal pitch. You should show examples of good and bad pitches so delegates can see what works and what doesn’t. For training content on this you can refer to Personal Impact Training Materials.
  • Place the blank cards on the table so everyone can access them.
  • Ask everyone to write their pitch on their cards. The pitch should last around 30 seconds when delivered. An ideal rate of speech is about 140 to 160 words per minute. Hence, the pitch should be around 70 to 80 words.
  • You have a choice here to ask them to make a pitch about a specific topic. Examples are:
    • Personality and job
    • Their products
    • Their company
    • A specific pitch for a specific product or service
  • Allocate 10 minutes for this part.
  • Ask delegates to randomly pair up with another person (such as the person on their left).
  • Each person in the pair should verbally present the pitch to the other person. Once delivered, the receiver should provide feedback. They should then work together to improve the pitch. Ask delegates to write this new pitch on a new card.
  • Repeat the exercise with the other person in the pair so both have new pitches.
  • Ask delegates to pair up with another person and repeat the process again by first delivering the pitch and then improve it again.
  • Delegates should continue to present their pitch and improve it round after round until they have presented it to everyone in the class.
  • Bring everyone back together and ask all delegates to present their pitch one by one to the class.
  • Provide feedback and follow with a discussion.

Timing

Explaining the Exercise: 2 minutes

Activity: 10 min pitch preparation + 30 min several rounds of improvement = 40 minutes

Group Feedback: 10 minutes

Discussion

Are you pleased with your pitch? What kind of feedback did you receive? What did you think of other people’s pitch? Did you get inspired by the way other people presented their pitch? Whose pitch do you think was the most effective and why?
