From the Author
Over the years, while designing courses and teaching trainers how to teach, I have noticed the same problem again and again.
Many courses are built around giving learners as much information as possible. But information alone does not create engagement. Learners listen. They nod. They click through the material. But mentally, they may no longer be there.
This matters more today than ever before. Today, every course competes with inboxes, notifications, AI shortcuts and the full circus of the internet. Whatever medium you use to teach, attention is no longer something you can assume. You have to design for it.
That is why I wrote Learner Engagement Tools.
This book has been in the making for several years. It became a passion project after I wrote my previous book, Course Design Strategy. The more I thought about engagement, the more I realised that it is a crucial part of learning and that we need a system for it. Engagement is not entertainment, and it is not about adding random gimmicks. Engagement is about making learners care so much that they do not want to stop learning. This is an art and you need tools for it.
Book Description
Learner Engagement Tools gives trainers, teachers and course designers a practical toolbox for keeping learners interested, active, focused and willing to keep going when the work gets difficult. Instead of vague advice, this book gives you 32 clear tools you can use to diagnose disengagement, design for engagement and fix weak moments in your course.
You will learn how to grab attention, build curiosity, keep them in control, manage cognitive load and reduce learner friction. You will help them learn how to turn failure into progress and feel confident enough to try.
This is not a book about gimmicks, filler activities or forced fun. It is about learner psychology and momentum: what makes learners switch off, what makes them resist, and how to make learning so enjoyable that they want to keep going.
In this book, you will learn how to:
- Make learners care about what you teach
- Respond when they drift, hesitate, resist, stay silent or give up
- Use stories, curiosity, surprise and challenge to pull them in
- Keep them focused and active without overwhelming them
- Make them want to learn from you and your course
- Give them more control without losing structure
The 32-Tool System
The book contains 32 tools organised into five sets:
Attention-Grab Tools
Help learners become curious, interested and willing to learn from you.
Keep-Active Tools
Create the right environment and keep learners involved, challenged and willing to stay with the task.
Capability Tools
Help learners build confidence, notice progress and believe they can overcome challenges.
Focus Tools
Reduce distractions, manage energy and balance cognitive load.
Support Tools
Encourage learners, show them where to go next and help them keep going without relying on you.
How Each Tool Works
Each tool is designed for practical use. It shows you:
- What the disengagement problem looks like
- How to think about the
problem - What to do next
The aim is to help you move from “my learners are not engaged” to a clearer diagnosis and a practical response.
Works Across Different Course Formats
The tools can be used in in-person workshops, live online sessions, self-paced courses and blended training. The format may change what you can do, but the core
engagement problems remain the same.
