Personal Development Exercise: In or Out

Personal Development Exercise: In or Out

Purpose

This simple exercise encourages delegates to think about their best qualities and those habits or behaviours that they like to improve on or get rid of. Recognising and accepting both personal qualities and weaknesses publicly increases participant’s self confidence and also encourages them to improve aspects of their behaviour that they are not happy with.

Objective

Delegates to share their good and bad points with the rest of the group.

What You Need

  • A flipchart or whiteboard
  • Marker pens

Setup

  • Draw a vertical line in the middle of the board or flipchart. Write “IN” on top of a column and “OUT” on top of another.
  • Ask delegates to write down one positive quality in the “IN” column and one weakness about themselves in the “OUT” column.
  • Participants have 30 seconds each for this exercise.
  • Repeat the exercise until everyone in the group has participated.

Timing

Explaining the Test: 5 minutes.

Activity: 15 minutes

Group Feedback: 10 minutes.

Discussion

Encourage a discussion on the importance of taking responsibility for our action and behaviours. Did acknowledging their qualities publicly helped delegates self esteem and confidence?
