Team Building Exercise: Guess Who is the Leader


In this activity, participants engage in a fun and entertaining exercise. A person at the centre of a group attempts to guess the leader of others based on what people do. It requires attention to detail to gestures, eyes and postures as well as looking at people carefully. It encourages quick decision making and extensive observation of body language and non-verbal signals.


Identify the leader of others based on reading their body language and movements.

What You Need

  • An empty area where everyone can form a circle and one person can stay in the middle of this circle.


  • Ask for a volunteer to be the Guesser. Ask this person to leave the room while you talk to others.
  • Ask others to nominate a Leader.
  • Ask them to form a circle.
  • Ask the Guesser to return and stay at the centre of the circle.
  • Explain that the Leader will initiate movements that all others must replicate.
  • The Guesser must identify the Leader.
  • Ask everyone to start making moves. The Leader should then start moving and others should replicate the Leader’s moves. The Leader is free to choose any movement he or she likes. These can be arm movements, leg movements, head movements, gestures, facial expressions and so on.
  • To identify the Leader, the Guesser must spin around to find out who initiates the moves which adds to the challenge.
  • Ask the group to be careful with their replication as not to reveal the Leader. For example, they should avoid continuous staring at the Leader or turn their heads towards the Leader.
  • A round finishes when the Guesser identifies the Leader. The person to the right of the Leader becomes the new Guesser and should leave the room so the group can select another Leader.
  • Allow the Guesser to make three mistakes when identifying the Leader. After three fails, the person on the left of the Leader becomes the new Guesser. Nominate another leader and carry on with the next round.
  • Repeat the exercise as many times as desired.
