Icebreaker: Choose A or B

Icebreaker: Choose A or B

Purpose

Use this icebreaker to encourage delegates to share information with each other about their likes and dislikes. The format of the activity give this exercise a structure so no time is lost wondering what to say or what not to include. You can carefully design the structure by choosing the right questions to bias the activity towards a direction of your choice.

Objective

Answer questions that give you only two choices that you have to select from and then explain why.

What You Need

  • You need a series of questions that you need to prepare before the course. You can either state these questions verbally as you go through the exercise or to show them one by one in separate slides as delegates attempt to answer them.

Setup

  • Explain to delegates that you will be asking them questions which they need to answer to the group as a whole.
  • Ask or present the question. The question must be in the format of, “Are you more of an A or more of a B?” or “Do you like A more than B?” Here are a number of example questions:
    • Are you a saver or spender?
    • Are you more of a reader or a clubber?
    • Do you like the present more or the future?
    • Are you an outdoor person or an indoor person?
    • Are you more like a BMW or a Porsche?
    • Are you more of the moon or the sun?
    • Are you a leader or a follower?
    • Do you like visiting a concert more or an art gallery?
    • Are you a spontaneous person or a planner?
  • Ask the delegates one by one to answer the question. They need to choose between A and B and also state why.
  • Ask the next question.
  • In a different order, ask the delegates to answer the question one by one.
  • Continue until all questions are presented.
