Has any one every tried combing soft skills training with language classes for advanced students.

The clients I have are okay with reading and writing, but they really need to focus on speaking skills. Also many of the candidates lack the necessary soft skills to work in a corporate environment.

Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think this highly depends on the language skill level of your students. Soft skills are quite broad. I guess you can easily mix content such as body language with learning a language because they are quite related. But, more advanced topics such as emotional intelligence, assertive behaviour and similar topics can be too far from learning a new language or too difficult to explain if you only want to talk in the new language while training them. I guess the topics need to be delivered in conjunction with each other in septate modules much like university courses. So while a person is learning a language they can also learn about communication skills, though this might need to be done in their own mother language.

Just some thoughts really, I don't know anyone who has done this.

Not sure really. I've kind of done it the other way round - with low level EFL speakers. Having to teach team building, communication, working effectively with others etc. I came to this as a soft skills trainer - and discovered that I wasn't being very effective. So I have since trained as an EFL instructor - and it helps me in my delivery. ie presenting vocabulary and adjusting language etc.

I currently teach a lot of soft skills to second language speakers - and my students are great on the speaking part, but have difficulty with the reading and writing. I'd be interested to see if anyone has any further useful comments on this topic!

MintQ8, the main problem with people’s dislike of roleplays is to be put on the spot. People just don’t like to look stupid/inferior/not-so-knowledgeable and so on. This is why they get stressed. So if you minimise this effect, the stress goes away. A great way to do this is to reduce the size of the audience. So instead of roleplaying in front of a large group, it is always better to divide the group to smaller sub-groups and then get people to roleplay in their own groups. People will be much happier to interact with smaller groups. The interaction brings people in each group closer together and helps people to relax.
