Does anybody here uses role plays as part of their training? and if yes how effective do you find them?
I personally not very keen on them, whenever it was used on me I felt slightly uncomfortable and even embaressed!!:-) |

Hi FabTrainer
What I've found useful is to get the managers to write up the scenarios for role playing. They are more familiar with the usual problems and issues encountered in their work environment and also it saves you lots of time and energy looking for subjects and scenarios. I hope this helps.

Role plays like roleplay.co.uk are wonderful to trasfer skills quickly to your employees. I think, if used properly they can be very effective in teaching the delegates about core conpects. |

Just checked the site John, looks like a great idea. Have you used them or a similar service yourself and if yes what do you think?

| No I haven't used them myself, though a colleague of mine recommended them to me. They seem to be well established. The alternative is to look for companies who supply actors for training purposes which can also be a very good approach. |

Hello friend,
Role playing is interesting and useful to students because it emphasizes on the real world side of science. It helps them to deal with complex problems and teaches them to use a variety of skills beyond those employed in a typical research project. It presents the student a valuable opportunity to learn not just the course content, but other perspectives on it.
So role playing is a important skill for students which helps them in their future development.
Regards,
Nelson

I don't really like role-playing, where I live at the moment - most of my students are not native English speakers and struggle with role-playing in English, and as I don't speak their languages either - I'm not much use!! However, I find that everywhere people groan at the whole idea of role play. I went on a training course - and in the intro the trainer announced there would be a role play later that day! I spent all morning dreading the role play - not paying as much attention as I should have. So 1) don't tell people that you're going to role play!!!! I think setting up role plays are tricky - so often you get told - okay now you're going to do this - do it! Even if their has been a period of learning - it is still difficult. So I borrowed something from EFL training. I start with a scripted role play and I act it out with a confident trainee. I continue with scripted role plays - where each person in a pair gets the opportunity of acting out either the same or a different scenario. Then dependent on the learning objectives and what I want practiced in the role play - I ask them to take some time to think of how they are going to portray a scenario think of some ideas etc - so they have some back ground information (some people may even want to write things down). Then I ask them to act out the scenario. Never once saying 'role play'. It's not always great - but I find that I get people acting out roles much better this way then when I just throw them into it. If I've taught my grandmother to suck eggs - I apologise. But whilst I don't like role play myself, I think it is an important tool if used correctly. |

MintQ8, you are right about roleplays putting people off. I have experienced exactly the same thing and I do just like you, I don't tell them that they will be doing a roleplay. I just tell them that there will be exercises later on which will help them to learn more. People usually get excited rather than getting worked up. But roleplays are tools indeed and will help a lot to make people remember what you teach them. So I will be using them all the time when appropriate. Sue Bennett |

Hi
Role play is one of the good technique of training in which real situations are put forward and the trainees have to act and react. but it can only be effective when trainees are showing interest in adopting this technique of training.
