I have a requirement to produce a course to get a team energised and more productive. We have sat down with our client to explore possible training courses we can provide. We can run a team building course, but the team has already been to a team building course before and I am not sure if they would be enthusiastic to attend yet another one. Have you ever been in this situation before? What would you suggest we run? We have some ideas such as leadership skills, or supervisory skills to get the team understand how it works from the top and inspire them to move towards these roles to increase autonomy.

Any thought are welcome.

Robert

Hi Rob

That’s an interesting problem. Here are some suggestions. Try coaching & mentoring skills, time management, communication skills, goal-setting, inter-personal skills and similar. You simply have to focus on enhancing group interactions and these courses would help. They may not be directly related to team building and might have a very similar effect if you include good interactive exercises that encourage team work and goal-oriented thinking. Hope your client is flexible on these choices.

Peter’s suggestion is  very useful. I can also add Performance Management to this list which can help the team on several topics such as goal-setting, coaching and communication skills all in one course.

Thanks Peter and Chelsea for your recommendations. They are indeed useful. I hadn’t thought about it in this way. Something like communication skills with dedicated team exercises sounds promising. I also like the idea of performance management, though it might need to be modified to suit our needs. I need to look into it. Lots of food for thought. Thanks.

Very good ideas here. You can also use 3D jigsaw puzzles. They are usually straight forward to explain and it also encourages team work and participation.

You can use a similar setup to the research that led to what is known as “Parkinson Law”. As you may know this states that !”Work expands to fill the time available to it”. You can use the following s...

John, you can give them some puzzles to solve. Do it in two stages. In stage 1, distract them or arrange so someone comes in and interrupts the group. In stage two, let them solve another similar puz...
